BIO
Singer-songwriter Rachel Kae has been playing guitar since the
age of twelve. With her background in piano, musical theatre, and
creative writing, singing her own songs seemed to be a natural step.
For over a decade, the San Diego-based artist has been developing
her own style of writing and performance.
Kae's songwriting is motivated by her own personal challenges and a
deep-rooted interest in human behavior. An avid reader, Kae often
draws from art, history, and science to construct her tales of love,
loss, and self-discovery. "Event Horizon," for example, likens the
gravitational pull of a black hole to the lure of a new relationship
formed against ones better judgment.
"It's All About You," conversely, is a passionate manifesto
of independence from a histrionic friend. The choppy guitar compliments
amusing vignettes of daily life with a drama queen. In the song,
Kae relates: "I am like a Magic 8-Ball you keep on shaking
up 'til I tell you what you want to hear."
Kae takes a different approach in songs like "Obsessive."
Here she looks inward, using an invented story of a destructive
relationship to describe her own tendency to self-criticize. But
even in darker moments, Kae's songs always contain an element of
hope, a desire to transcend, to improve circumstances by changing
the self.
Kae has been performing in San Diego for over seven years. Some
of her gig credits include the San Diego County Fair, Twiggs, Lestat's,
The Living Room, The Roseary Room, The Epicentre, and a segment
on the independent music television show, The Underground Lounge.
In 2004, Kae released a self-titled independent EP that she is preparing
to follow up with a full-length album. The working title "Running
Through Water" reflects her favorite theme of finding strength
through opposition.
